The Duffer Brothers Just Said The Thing You’re Not Supposed To Say In Interviews, And “Stranger Things” Fans Are Gagged

As you probably know, the Netflix series Stranger Things came to an explosive end last month — almost 10 years after it first hit our screens back in July 2016.

It's fair to say that the show has become somewhat of a cultural phenomenon, blending ’80s nostalgia with supernatural horror and coming-of-age drama, and it quickly catapulted its cast of child stars, including Millie Bobby Brown, to global fame.

It was also the show’s creators and writers, Matt and Ross Duffer, aka the Duffer brothers, breakout success in the industry, earning them tens of millions of dollars over the last nine years.

And the Duffers acknowledged how fruitful the show has been for them in a recent interview, where they referred to Stranger Things as their “safety net” and bluntly admitted that they’d bring the show back if they were ever in need of some cash — and their brutal honesty has not gone down well online.

For context, the interview was with Entertainment Tonight, with a video clip showing the actors from the show being asked if the recent finale was “really the end,” or if they could see it being “explored in a movie or a spin-off.”

As all of the cast confirmed that they don’t believe there will be any more from Stranger Things, Finn Wolfhard mused: “I think if there’s a story when we’re all in very, very different stages of our lives, maybe… But I think the whole point of the show ending is because it's run its course.”

Natalia Dyer added: “It’s more of a question for the Duffers, grill them!”

And the Duffers had a surprisingly frank response, with Matt telling the same outlet: “This season really does close the door on this story and the characters.”

“I guess never say never, maybe in 20 years if we’re all broke and need some money,” he went on as Ross nodded in agreement. “We’ve all talked about it; this is our safety net.”

But this comment perhaps hasn’t landed as anticipated, with a viral tweet sharing Matt's quote on X and adding: “This is like the number one thing you do not say in an interview.”

“the concept of saying that if you ever come back is bc of money and not bc you care about the story but i mean it has been clear since s3,” somebody else tweeted.

Another incredibly popular tweet that has been liked more than 19,000 times jokes: “are the duffer brothers genuinely stupid. im asking.”

While one more quipped: “‘All the art here is long gone but we might consider making some nostalgia slop for idiots down the road.’”

However, somebody else had a different take, concluding: “at least theyre honest.”
