“Shooting would have helped me obtain my health insurance through the union.”
Back in 2017, Jennifer Marshall joined Season 2 of Stranger Things as Max’s mom, Susan Hargrove. While she did not return in Season 3, she was back on our screens in Season 4 — which famously ended with Max in a coma in the hospital.

Yet, for some reason, Susan did not feature at all in the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, which premiered in November — and Jennifer has now called the show out for axing her character amid her cancer diagnosis.
Taking to her Instagram page shortly after the final episode aired on New Year’s Eve, Jennifer asked her followers: “But where was Max’s mom?? Give your theories below… best ones get reposted!”

She added in the post’s caption: “Okay folks! It’s over…but where was she? What kind of mother isn’t there for her child while she’s in the hospital? Give me all your theories…”

Then, on Tuesday, Jennifer returned to her social media page to more directly put Stranger Things on blast, this time explaining that being in Season 5 would have been beyond beneficial for her in terms of obtaining health insurance.
The actor shared a video of herself joking about how often she wonders about where Max’s mom was, and added in the caption: “I had cancer, I get it. But I was in remission during the shooting of season five. Shooting would have helped me obtain my health insurance through the union.”
“Maybe they had too many characters, idk,” Jennifer went on. “but obv Susan Hargrove is THE WORST MOTHER EVER LMAO.” She also added the hashtags: #strangerthings #strangerthings5 #cancer #cancersucks #butwhy.

And Jennifer opened up some more in the comments. When one follower wrote: “I was wondering about that. Figured there would be a hospital scene with you at some point,” Jennifer replied: “we shot one! I think the writers were afraid I’d die so they omitted it? Idk.”

When somebody else commented: “Wait WHAT!?!?!?!!!!! You shot scenes and they didn’t think it was something to ADD!!! What the heck @rossduffer begging please show this PLEASE begging! @slevydirect,” Jennifer clarified that this footage had actually been shot during filming for Season 4. She explained: “no I was in one scene at her bedside. It wasn’t a full fledged scene. It was something we shot during season four.”

Jennifer also confirmed some details about her cancer diagnosis, saying: “I was battling cancer during season four and was in remission by season five.”

And when she was asked if she had initially been told that she would feature in the season, Jennifer replied: “they don’t tell anyone their plans…that’s why there are no spoilers :)”

Needless to say, the whole thing has left people feeling pretty bad for Jennifer, with one viral tweet sharing screenshots of some of her posts and adding: “I’m so mad for the actress of Max’s mom. This is sinister and disgusting. This woman needed the money and they also cut the scene she was apart of?”

The same user added in a subsequent tweet: “Not including her in the graduation scene was weird. Not showing her mom at the hospital is weird. Why did they make her a horrible absent mom who wouldn’t show up to her own kids graduation? The other kids parents were present.”
