There are times when I really enjoy a well-written and thrilling cliffhanger in a film. It's enough to get me on the edge of my seat and thoroughly satisfied with the ending. However, I detest when films and shows end with a cliffhanger when they had a sequel planned, which never materialized, leaving all of the fans alone and furious. Why do you treat us like this, Hollywood? Just why?
1. "Masters of the Universe 1987, when Skeletor popped up at the end and said he would be back. Well...I'm still waiting, Skeletor, you fool!"
2. "Doctor Strange. The post-credit scene with Mordo, where he says that the problem is 'too many sorcerers' as he takes the power away from the Benjamin Bratt character. Instead of getting that movie, which would’ve been about Doctor Strange clashing with Mordo to preserve magic in our dimension, we got that waste of time and money that was 'Multiverse of Madness.'"
3. "Still waiting for Scott Evil to take over the world in Austin Powers 4."
4. "I don't even care if they're good or not; I just want closure on the Fantastic Beasts series. Should have been a one-off, but now we have 3 movies with a number of unresolved plot threads."
6. "Master and Commander. Did the French captain steal back the Acheron? I MUST KNOW."
7. "Big Hero 6: In an era of superhero movies, franchises, and universe building, along with Pixar/Disney throwing out countless unnecessary sequels and remakes—they made an awesome superhero origin movie and then apparently just forgot about it."
8. "District 9. It's been way more than 3 years!"
9. "Cloverfield. 10 Cloverfield Lane is a GREAT movie. But Cloverfield had a very intense ARC with all this additional information, and it has NEVER been resolved. And now I just have SO MUCH useless information about things happening in that movie."
10. "Jumper. The movie wasn’t great, but it had some of the coolest teleporting abilities I’ve seen to date, and the lore was decently interesting. I know there was a TV show, but I haven’t seen it. Are the jumping effects as cool? Is it in the same world as the movie or a different adaptation of the books?"
11. "The Man from U.N.C.L.E. needs a sequel. Not so much of a cliffhanger, but the ending was literally set up for a second movie. The actors are amazing; I could watch Henry Cavill all day long."
12. "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. It's been like 40 damn years, dammit."
13. "Didn't end on a big cliffhanger, but Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023) deserves a goddamn sequel."
14. "Not a movie, but Mindhunter on Netflix."
15. "Dredd. The 2012 masterpiece that perfectly captured Judge Dredd from his comics. The feeling of Megacity One, the tower, everything. This film was so much better than every other attempt to put Dredd on the screen and deserved a franchise, not just a sequel."
16. "The Divergent series didn’t do well enough, but they made the last book into a 2-parter and only released part 1! Very annoying."
17. "Odd Thomas. I know, I know! Go read the books, but that movie was amazing! So angry they didn’t do the whole series."
18. "The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Still waiting to see what happens between him and the Rhino bot."
19. "The History of the World Part I. I saw this movie 35 years ago. I checked Blockbuster every goddamn day for years for part 2 because surely it would be out soon, right? Why would they call it part 1 if there wasn't a series? There was no fucking internet to tell me any sort of update on this already 10-year-old movie's sequel. I just thought it was a rare copy. I'm still fucking mad at Mel Brooks."
20. "National Treasure 3."
I 100% wholeheartedly agree with these responses. We NEED these sequels ASAP. What are some other films or TV shows that ended with an unresolved cliffhanger and didn't have a sequel? Let us know in the comments!
