There was a time when wearing the same outfit to multiple events was, like, the worst fashion crime a celebrity could commit.

Nowadays, however, outfit repeating is celebrated for promoting sustainability as well as making fans feel nostalgic! Here are 21 times celebs rewore their red carpet looks:
1. THE ORIGINAL: At the 2015 Oscars, Zendaya wore a Vivienne Westwood gown. Reflecting on the look, she told Vogue, "This is my first Oscars experience. I had stayed up quite late the night before, having my hair done. I didn't have any kind of credentials or anything. Kinda snuck onto the red carpet, 'cause I was like, 'Listen, I have been up all night getting my hair done. We have this amazing Vivienne Westwood dress. Like, I'm getting on this red carpet.' And so I kinda shimmied on there, even though I wasn't really supposed to."

At the time, her locs — and the eloquent way she critiqued cruel comments about the hairstyle — made headlines. Fashion Police host Giuliana Rancic said, "I feel like she smells like patchouli oil...maybe weed."
On Twitter, Zendaya said, "There is a fine line between what is funny and disrespectful. Someone said something about my hair at the Oscars that left me in awe. Not because I was relishing in rave outfit reviews but because I was hit with ignorant slurs and pure disrespect. To say that an 18-year-old young woman with locs must smell of patchouli oil or 'weed' is not only a large stereotype but outrageously offensive. I don't usually feel the need to respond to negative things, but certain remarks cannot go unchecked... I suggest some people should listen to India Arie's 'I Am Not My Hair' and contemplate a little before opening your mouth so quickly to judge."
Giuliana made a public apology, telling E!, "I'd really like to address something that is weighing very heavy on my heart. Something I said last night did cross the line. I want to say to Zendaya and anyone else out there that I have hurt that I am so, so sincerely sorry... This incident has taught me to be a lot more aware of clichés and stereotypes, how much damage they can do."
THE REWEAR: In 2026, she brought the dress back out for the premiere of her new movie, The Drama. She told Variety, "I was brainstorming with [stylist Law Roach] about how I would theme dress for this film, and I kind of remembered the saying, 'Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.' So I thought I'd bring it back. [The 2015 Oscars] was such an important moment for myself, my community, for my loved ones, and it felt right. And it also happens to be a wedding dress, so that works."

2. THE ORIGINAL: In 1999, Elizabeth Hurley wore a black Versace dress to the Met Gala, where the theme was "Rock Style."

THE REWEAR: In March 2026, she rewore the dress on an international trip. On Instagram, she said, "Viva Versace! For this weekend's adventure in India, I dug into my archives and unearthed one of my favourite pieces, which I last wore to the Met Gala in 1999 😳 27 years may have passed, but some loves never fade."
In another Instagram post, Elizabeth said, "India has been a pivotal part of my life for over 20 years and I cherish every moment in this magnificent country 🇮🇳 What a magical first night back in paradise, reuniting with some of my favourite people on the planet ♥️ Wearing a @versace dress from my archive which I last wore 27 years ago to the 1999 Met Gala 😳 @donatella_versace 💋."

3. THE ORIGINAL: Lily Gladstone wore a Gucci gown with quillwork adorning the neckline to the 2024 Vanity Fair Oscar party. It was co-created by Gucci creative director Sabato De Sarno and Indigenous designer Joe Big Mountain of Ironhorse Quillwork.

The same team worked on her dress for the ceremony.
Joe Big Mountain and his wife, Sunshine, told Gucci, "For the dresses, we utilized a couple different styles of quillwork, one being zigzag stitch and one being a wrap. These techniques are passed down through family and certain people in the community. To have Lily choose to wear our work and to be able to partner with Gucci and Sabato is just so near and dear, not only to our family and our hearts but to our people as a whole."
Both gowns were displayed at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian.
THE REWEAR: At the 2025 SAG Awards, Lily walked the red carpet in the same dress. They told InStyle, "Joe Big Mountain does one of the oldest forms of art on this continent — [it's] quillwork. So, porcupine quills is what the adornment is. I mean, this is going to be in the Smithsonian. We had to get it back from the Smithsonian."

4. THE ORIGINAL: At the 2020 BAFTAs, Saoirse Ronan wore a black Gucci gown that the luxury house's former creative director, Alessandro Michele, made from discarded satin. Her stylist, Elizabeth Saltzman, told British Vogue, "We wanted to create a gown that didn't waste any resources or people's time. It's the first time we've gone dead simple, but we've been geeking out about the intricate craftsmanship. I love that the most classic pieces are often the hardest to make – it feels good to celebrate this unique work."

On Instagram, Halle said, "Not only will this historic @eliesaabworld gown remain in the expert care of the museum’s curators and conservators, but it will also be accessible to generations of people for whom the dress also holds meaning and forever be a reminder that all things are possible. Thank you @academymuseum!"
THE REWEAR: In 2024, Halle wore the legendary gown when she made a surprise onstage appearance at an Elie Saab show in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. On Instagram, she said, "There are some moments in life that just happen and they change our lives forever! Winning an Academy Award in my @eliesaabworld gown was one of those moments for me! Thank you Mr. Saab for being a part of the tapestry of my life as we have been inextricably connected for 22 years now! It was my honor to celebrate you and your 1001 Seasons. Here's wishing you many more glorious years of joy, creativity and glamour!"

8. THE ORIGINAL: When The Dressmaker premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2015, Kate Winslet wore a gray Badgley Mischka dress. It retailed for $1,190.

George Pimentel / WireImage / Via Getty
THE REWEAR: In 2022, she sported the same look to the Avatar: The Way of Water premiere. Back in 2020, mid-pandemic, she told Vanity Fair, "The dresses, the stress, the dress fittings… It's so stressful, and I know that sounds like, 'Oh, here goes Kate Winslet talking about how stressful it is to do dress fittings for award shows.' But it is stressful. I don't like having to squeeze my hot-and-bothered mum-on-the-school-run body randomly into a red carpet dress that I'm never going to wear again. The money that's wasted on it. The hours and stress that people pour into these things. The incredible artists who make these dresses are wonderful, but to make something that's only going to be worn once…I've already decided I'm doing repeat dresses. Everything will have to be let out, but whatever."

In 2021, she told People, "I [was] like, 'Oh, hell no. This is my mortgage. I can't wear this dress...I was just devastated [I couldn't return it]. I was very upset that I spent that much money on a dress, period. Then I was like, 'Well, I'm going to wear this dress everywhere I go. I'm going to get my money's worth.' ... The dress has made me the money that it cost, plus, at this point."

15. THE ORIGINAL: When Rita Moreno won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1962, she wore a gown she'd had custom-made across the world. She told E! host Ryan Seacrest, "I had no idea I was going to win, I was sure it was going to be Judy Garland for Judgment at Nuremberg. I flew in from Manila in the Philippines, just in case, which is where this gown was made."

Bettmann / Bettmann Archive / Via Getty
THE REWEAR: At the 2018 Academy Awards, Rita walked the red carpet in her original Oscars gown. She told Variety, "This is as historic as the event is tonight because this is the gown that I wore in 1962 when I won my Oscar. When I started to think, 'What'll I wear?' I thought, 'Oh my God, of course! I have to wear my gown!' It's been sitting in my closet for 56 years. ... We had to take it out a little bit. ... I'm so proud that I can still wear the damn thing."

Daniele Venturelli / WireImage / Via Getty
THE REWEAR: At the 2020 Academy Awards, she paired the gown with a discounted coat she declared would be the last piece of clothing she ever bought. Previously, during one of her Fire Drill Fridays protests, she said, "You see this coat? I needed something red, and I went out and found this coat on sale. This is the last article of clothing that I will ever buy. When I talk to people about, 'We don't really need to keep shopping. We shouldn't look to shopping for our identity. We don't need more stuff,' then I have to walk the walk, too. So I'm not buying any more clothes."

Ilya S. Savenok / Getty Images
THE FIFTH REWEAR: Finally, in 2015, the dress made an appearance at Stephen Daldry's Tony Nomination Celebration. She later told British Vogue, "The way we as a society consume fashion has become unsustainable. With the rise in fast fashion and judgement about rewearing outfits, even off the red carpet, clothing has become almost as throwaway as single-use plastics. Waste creation is a danger for us and animals on land, and for the fish in the sea."

George Pimentel / WireImage / Via Getty
THE REWEAR: She wore the same dress to the opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival in 2018. She told the Hollywood Reporter, "From couture to T-shirts, landfills are filled with garments that have been unnecessarily discarded. Particularly in today's climate, it seems willful and ridiculous that such beautiful garments are not cherished and reworn for a lifetime."

VALERY HACHE / AFP via Getty Images
Her stylist, Elizabeth Stewart, added, "We couldn't see any reason not to re-wear a dress we love so much and so many reasons to re-wear a dress. It's not just couture gowns that take hundreds of hours to make but all clothes that are filling landfills. We need to get the word out to get rid of this ridiculous notion that dresses cannot be worn twice! Beautiful clothes should last a lifetime."
Here's a side-by-side:

Bonus fact: For Cate's 2023 SAG Awards look, material leftover from the original dress was repurposed into a new design. On Instagram, Elizabeth said, "Who's wearing a custom @giorgioarmani dress with re-purposed lace left over from a dress worn in 2014 and 2018? You guessed it: #CateBlanchett (also wearing @louisvuitton jewelry)."
